Abstract
Multi-echelon inventory systems are an essential component of successful supply chain management because of the fact that they successfully manage their inventory levels from multiple layers of interconnected networks. These layers include suppliers, warehouses, and distribution centers. The primary focus of this chapter is to examine advanced optimization models used for coordinating inventory decision-making within multiple levels of the supply chain in order to reduce the overall cost of the system while still achieving a satisfactory level of service. The chapter discusses both deterministic and stochastic models that can be used to consider variability in demand, lead times, and capacity; as well as how well the model fits within decision-making processes. Emphasis will be given to such optimization tools as dynamic programming, linear optimization, and simulation-based modeling in order to achieve global optimizations rather than just local optimizations. Additionally, this chapter will discuss the impact that information sharing and digital technologies have on improving visibility and responsiveness. Ultimately, by enabling all levels of the supply chain to implement similar inventory policies, multi-echelon optimizations allow supply chain organizations to eliminate redundancy, improve efficiency, and develop resilient supply chains that can respond quickly to changes in demand and supply uncertainty.
