Abstract
The booming of modernized industrial world with extensive manufacturing technologies and mass production leads to an immensely colossal volume of recalcitrant waste materials including waste water with harmful pollutants, posing solemn hazards and degrades the environment to the very extent. So, there is a drastic need to develop incipient methods to mitigate this waste water effect which are limited by the conventional waste water technologies. On the other hand clean and portable water scarcity prevails in the developing countries like India due to the increase in water contamination by the intensive industrial productions and manufacturing. Government of India also allocated Rs 60,000 crores for piped water mission to provide clean water by reaching 3.8 crore households through Jal Jeevan Mission during the financial year 2022-2023, which is about Rs 50,000 crores for the previous year 2021-2022. For decades, there are many conventional waste water treatment technologies have been installed and prospered to some extent to treat the waste water effluents to meet the standard requisites. Therefore, there is a need for improving the waste water treatment technologies and also to render the waste water treated for reuse in industrial, domestic and agricultural sectors. This book chapter mainly discuss the new and emerging technologies under physical, chemical, biological treatments and some In-plant water management processes that have been tested at a pilot or demonstration scale and have been implemented at larger scale, only in few developed countries. The fundamental principles behind these technologies, their types and applications, its merits, and demerits are addressed in this chapter with cognation to their current limitations and future research needs.
