Abstract
Some mysterious form of the energy, known as dark energy, is responsible for this cosmic acceleration. This chapter discusses thoroughly different cosmological models which can describe the observed evolution of the universe along with their detailed comparative features. These models include different modified gravity models like f(R) gravity, scalar-tensor theories, Gauss-Bonnet gravity and Braneworld models. At the local scales (galactic scale), we do not need any modification in general theory of relativity. So, we consider the mechanisms in which the effect of modification vanishes.
