Abstract
The Brahmaputra basin in Assam is recognized as one of the richest regions in the country in terms of its water resources. Being located in a heavy rainfall zone and blessed with numerous snow-fed streams and rivers, the region is renowned for its diverse fish population, particularly in terms of ornamental fish. An attempt is made to provide detailed insights into the hydrobiological characteristics of certain wetlands in the region, including the major physico-chemical parameters of these water bodies, which are crucial for understanding the aquatic ecosystem. The various issues about wetland management faced by the stakeholders in the understanding of fisheries ecology in the wetlands of the Brahmaputra basin have been addressed. The negative impacts of human activities, such as regulating water flow, indiscriminate fishing, encroachment of wetland areas, etc., on aquatic habitats and their biota have been pointed out. It also highlights issues like siltation, habitat destruction, and the use of harmful fishing practices and calls for urgent conservation efforts to save the aquatic habitats in the region and their biota. Finally, it emphasizes the need for awareness programmes and the implementation of fisheries and conservation laws to arrest the rapid depletion of aquatic fauna and emphasizes the need for conservation efforts and sustainable management of aquatic resources.
