Abstract
This study investigates the impact of population growth on the economy of Tamil Nadu, a key state in India known for its rapid urbanization and industrial development. With a population exceeding 72 million, Tamil Nadu faces both opportunities and challenges from demographic changes. The research aims to analyze how population growth influences economic indicators such as GDP, employment, infrastructure development, and resource allocation. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study utilizes time-series data from sources like the Census of India and Tamil Nadu Economic Surveys, alongside econometric models to quantify relationships between population dynamics and economic outcomes. Findings reveal that population growth contributes to a larger labor force, driving industrial and service sector growth, but also strains infrastructure and public services, particularly in urban centers like Chennai. The study highlights the potential for a demographic dividend if accompanied by investments in education and skill development, while also identifying risks of resource depletion and unemployment. Policy recommendations include enhancing human capital, improving urban planning, and promoting sustainable development to balance population pressures with economic growth. This research provides valuable insights for policymakers aiming to harness Tamil Nadu’s demographic trends for long-term economic prosperity.
