Abstract
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) began as a way for companies to donate money to charities. However, it has now evolved into an important tool for businesses to contribute to the sustainable development of their communities through disaster relief and recovery activities. Disasters such as floods, earthquakes and cyclones can have a devastating impact on a community's social fabric, physical infrastructure, and economic stability. Corporations therefore have an opportunity to help communities recover from the effects of disasters by using their CSR programs to provide immediate assistance during times of need and to help rebuild communities after disasters. This research investigates how businesses develop and implement integrated disaster recovery CSR strategies to support their stakeholders as well as those affected by disasters through immediate relief and long-term recovery efforts. Corporations are increasingly partnering with governments, non-profit organizations, and local communities to provide immediate relief resources such as food, medical care, shelter, and financial assistance to affected areas. In addition to providing immediate relief assistance, CSR initiatives also include post-disaster recovery with an emphasis on rebuilding infrastructure damaged by disasters, enhancing disaster preparedness in the future, protecting the environment within the area affected by disasters, and redeveloping businesses affected by the disaster. The research illustrates how corporate participation enhances social responsibility while enhancing the corporation's credibility and trust with stakeholders. The research also describes many innovative CSR practices that help to reduce disaster risks and promote sustainable development in communities. Effective CSR approaches help communities recover from their disaster experience while strengthening their ability to handle future disasters and therefore create a win-win outcome for society and corporations.
